Skelos Press is proud to present a facsimile edition of one of the rarest and most valuable of all Conan and Robert E. Howard publications - the legendary 1938 chapbook The Hyborian Age published by LANY Cooperative. Originally compiled by Forrest J. Ackerman, Donald Wollheim, and several other notable fans of the time, this booklet contains the first full publication of Howard's world-building essay "The Hyborian Age," along with the first published map of Conan's world. It also includes the first appearance of the famous essay "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career" by P. Schuyler Miller and Dr. John D. Clark, as well as an introductory letter from H. P. Lovecraft. This modern facsimile edition includes a new introductory essay by Howard expert and pulp scholar Jeffrey Shanks discussing the history of this publication and the back-story behind "The Hyborian Age."

A must have for Robert E. Howard (REH) fans and scholars! Although I am not a scholar I am a huge fan and read as much as I can on and about REH. This is a rare treat to be able to read the chronological history of The Hyborian Age and Conan's travels in it.

The reason REH created the Hyborian Age was to provide very realistic stories. The Picts who are short savages have a major impact in the Hyborian Age. REH is the best author and poet ever! He is better than Edgar Allen Poe. All of REH stories are passionately written and he is in each and every one especially Beyond The Black River.

There are some rare B&W old photos of REH scholars inside and additional photos.

Jeffrey Shanks did a great job on this and the introduction was terrific! Also, I really liked Mark Finn's telling about REH's boxing skills and boxing stories. REH actually walked shadow boxing to a nearby icehouse and boxed a great many time. He bulked himself up when he was younger so bullies would not pick on him.

I liked everything about this book and hope many more books are forthcoming. It is the same size as the B&W Marvel Savage Sword of Conan's so I placed in the same size bag and board and keeping for future reading and reference. This book is a great reference because it lists all of the stories of Conan and in chronological order! Has maps and a lot more!

If you have never read a REH story you are in for a real treat!! Please download Red Nails as it is FREE and my favorite story of REH and the first one I read many years ago. Also, read Blood and Thunder, The Life and Art of REH by Mark Finn and One Who Walked Alone by Novalyne Price Ellis who was REH's girlfriend and a school teacher.

Very much appreciated! I give this book my highest rating! Keep em coming!

A great book to have on your shelf if you're a Howard fan. I've read The Hyborian Age essay in other books, but never had the chance to read the Probable Outline of Conan's Career in it's entirety. Great reproduction of a historical small press book.
This is the Hyborian age as written by the master himself, Robert E. Howard, one of the greatest pulp authors of all time. It is really a fun read, and gives one the vision that Howard had for the Hyborian Age. Just wish he had lived long enough to flesh it out more.
In the years since his death, Robert E. Howard has not quite been served so well as H. P. Lovecraft. While both men have attracted an eager scholarship, Lovecraft has retained the pre-eminent interest, while Howard scholarship has lagged somewhat. Thankfully, in the last decade or so that is changing. With the publication of Howard's collected letters and all of his fiction and poetry, right down to The Last of the Trunk, thanks to the Robert E. Howard Foundation and other groups. But Howard scholarship often remains less accessible until recently, with the publication of The Dark Barbarian That Towers Over All The Robert E. Howard LitCrit MegaPack, and with this facsimile edition of The Hyborian Age.

The Hyborian Age was an essay created by Robert E. Howard, nailing down the world development and history of his characters Kull and Conan the Cimmerian, and which informed the fantasy worlds of Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, John Kirowan and Michael Conrad. In his own words, Howard traces out - in the same racialist language of his day - the development of kingdoms and empires, the movements of people, the strange descent into decadence and the rise of strong barbarians which would mark much of his fiction, and his correspondence with H. P. Lovecraft. In addition, the book contains "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career" by P. Schuyler Miller & John D. Clark - the effective ur-point of Howard scholarship, a fan effort at tracing the wily Cimmerian's far-roving adventures and nail them into some sort of timeline. While both of these pieces have been reprinted at different times over the years, this is the first facsimile edition of the original 1930 publication - a valuable resource for both old Howard scholars and new, considering the cost of the first edition!
